While the release of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish appears to be another unnecessary cash grab, based on a franchise that has seemingly taken a dip in recent years, the sequel expands not only on the legend of Puss in Boots but also explores deeper concepts about family, anxiety, and even death. The Last Wish takes a different approach from the previous films in the Shrek franchise and decides to animate in a hybrid of the comic-book style from Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse with painting brushstrokes. Just as the sequel’s animation brings the story to life, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has rejuvenated the franchise all together. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish keeps the same humor and twists on storybook tales from the original films, while also introducing new characters, themes, and concepts. The film is a perfect blend of the ideas that initially made the franchise successful and fresh creativity and imagination.

Currently, The Last of Us is amidst its first season and releasing new episodes every Sunday. Based on the video game bearing the same name, The Last of Us depicts a world taken over by zombie-like creatures called “infected” due to a pandemic. While video game adaptations are normally heavily criticized, The Last of Us is an exception. The show takes the premise from the game and creates a thoughtful and atmospheric gritty world. The show perfectly balances staying true to the source material while also being unafraid to deviate. With great performances from Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and Nick Offerman, The Last of Us abandons some of the video game action to focus on the characters, their hope for survival, and connection towards each other.
