Graduating seniors from ALAS, ASC, and BSU with graduation sashes smile on stage.
On May 11, graduating seniors from the Magis Program and Affinity Groups celebrated their accomplishments as the Class of 2022.

Seniors clamored for seats in Carlin Commons during the Magis and Affinity Group Senior Celebration on May 11, a gathering that celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2022 and their future after graduation approaching in two short weeks. Tables filled with the laughter and conversation of Wildcats excitedly looking toward the next years and fondly reviving memories from their first steps on the campus.

Amidst hectic departures from and returns to in-person classes, the graduating class of 2022 weathered “an overwhelming roller coaster of emotions,” Izzy Escalante ’22 said during her speech at the celebration. Izzy addressed her fellow classmates, reflecting on her SI experience and sharing that Magis taught her that she, despite initially feeling out of place, has earned the successes that come her way.

Earlier in the afternoon, Magis bestowed end-of-year awards to leaders within the Magis and Affinity community, honoring impactful involvement in service, social justice, and Affinity groups. In addition, Magis associate director Mr. Brian Davis, who will be leaving SI and pursuing a doctorate, earned the Magis Staff Award for his contributions to expanding the mission of the Center for Equity and Inclusion. Two years ago, he introduced the Magis Treasure publication, which shares educational opportunities to students and their families.

After sharing dinner together, each Senior walked up a central red carpet, the centerpiece of the event, to many cheers from classmates and supporters and received their Affinity sashes, which they will wear during the graduation ceremony on May 28.

Many Seniors, such as Emily Yoshii ’22, hope to “bring the same energy and create a safe space for myself and others in the community” when they reach their college campuses.

“Use the space [in your future] to tell your story,” Izzy concluded her speech. “You deserve it.”
