Athletes in Arts

Athletes have engaged in the arts such as dance.

Contrary to popular belief, the athletic and artistic scenes of SI are not completely separate; rather, they constantly intersect. Students are often both athletes and artists. Both artistic creativity and exercise have positive effects on one's wellness, so it’s no wonder students are apt to reach out to both spheres of SI.

A common misconception is that athletes are only athletes. Grace Schwarz ’23, a Carleton College women’s basketball commit, also plays the violin. “Being an athlete, musician, and artist has really opened me up to new experiences, because I’ve noticed that at SI athletes often get pushed into one box,” Schwarz said. “I really enjoy meeting new people, and being a musician has been a universal way to make new friends. People don’t always expect me to be an athlete, and also expect me to be able to play the violin and draw a tree. I think being competent in many things is a really good life skill.”

Athletes at SI have also found they appreciate fulfilling their fine arts requirements. Jo Lum ’23, one of four softball captains currently enrolled in Dance 1B, looks forward to dance class when she wakes up in the morning. Lum shared, “I love starting the day off being surrounded by the calmness of Weigand, and learning new dance techniques everyday. I’m genuinely grateful for the opportunity.” While Lum was not originally involved in the arts at SI, her graduation requirement encouraged her to embrace new experiences and creativity.

If you are a freshman athlete dreading taking a fine art next year, don’t worry! You will most likely enjoy the class, learn many new skills, and make new friends. Don’t fall for the trap of being boxed in—it will only hold you back from your full potential.
